How to get to La Gomera, an easy journey.
La Gomera is a small island. It connects with regional flights through its airport (GMZ) with the Canarian Airline Binter Canarias and the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, its capital. Most of the direct flights and routes connect it with Tenerife. Seen from Europe, the way to the island is via Tenerife South/Reina Sofia Airport (TFS). From here it is about 15 kilometers to the port of Los Cristianos where leave the ferries to La Gomera.
Within the island is very easy to travel. The roads offer good indications for those who rent a car. The hiking routes are also well signposted and the bus lines are easy to understand (though scarce).
Arriving via Tenerife South
The second airport of Tenerife, Tenerife Norte „Los Rodeos“ (TFN), is situated about 8 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. From the northern airport it is about 70 kilometres to Los Cristianos, where the ferries to La Gomera cast off.
The ferry companies Fred Olsen Express and Naviera Armas offer to their customers a free non-stop coach to the ferry port of Los Cristianos. The buses pull out 90 minutes before departure of the ferries at the central bus station of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Estación de guaguas de Santa Cruz).
If you have booked flights to Tenerife-North, it is easiest to take a taxi to the central bus station and then continue with the bus. Ferry+bus tickets are bookable online or at their counters in the bus station.
Alternatively the small planes of the Canarian airline Binter Canarias are heading from Tenerife-North (TFN) to La Gomera (GMZ) two times a day. The flight takes about half an hour. The airport of La Gomera is located close to Playa de Santiago. The one-way ticket costs around 25 euros for non-residents (i.e. people who are not officially registered in the Canary Islands).
Arriving via Tenerife North
A flight from Europe takes from 4 to 5 hours. If you want to reach La Gomera on your arrival date without a stopover on Tenerife, we recommend to book flights landing in Tenerife South before 5:30 p.m. and no earlier than 11:00 a.m. on departure. Most international flights arrival and depart from Tenerife South. Tenerife North Airport has plenty of regional and national flights.
From there you can take a pre-booked airport-to-hotel transfer service with Autobuses Mesa. It includes ferry tickets and luggage handling for your arrival – departure.
From the airport Tenerife-South to the ferry port of Los Cristianos it is about 15 minutes by taxi (15 km, 24 Euros). There is also a bus connection between the airport Tenerife-South and Los Cristianos with the two lines of TITSA no. 111 and no. 343. The bus stop in Los Cristianos is situated about 1 km from the ferry port, though. (Some of the buses of the line 111 stop at the ferry terminal of Los Cristianos before they continue to Playa de las Américas – please ask the driver). Bus or car?
If your goal is flexibility, you should go for a car rental. Book it in advance, there is some shortage or rentals availability. Roads are narrow, so you might want to chose a car size you are used to or smaller. There are some locally-owned companies that you can book online from: Autos Mulagua, Rentacar Piñero and Autos La Rueda. If you wish to walk around the island and use the bus lines for your longer trips, please check our bus lines and schedules section. They connect easily the main villages, but you will find them lacking if you wish to go to hiking routes. In that case, you can take a taxi for around 25 to 30€. Or you can also hike from our lodgings without a vehicle on the proposed routes around Hermigua and Agulo.
